A PvP grid-based tactical deckbuilder in which players defend their own headquarters using ship and ability cards, and can successfully attack the opponent's once the opponent has no active ships left.
This was a group project where I was experimenting with combining deckbuilding with hidden information in a way how the game Battleship worked. I outsourced the programming aspect to someone outside of my school which enabled me to fully focus on the game design aspect. My main responsibility was to come up with the cards, from their names to their functionality as well as making sure they were balanced properly.
The name for this project is based on the phrase "Boy, oh boy...", a statement that is made, among other things, when someone is stressed or surprised. Since I was working with ships and hidden information I found "Buoy, oh Buoy" to be the perfect fit for this project.
Working with external people
Creating and balancing playing cards
Experimenting with combining aspects from certain game genres and their respective mechanics.
My decision to completely outsource the programming allowed me to be 100% focused on the game design aspect. Instead of insisting on doing everything myself, I started examining my own skill limitations. This gave me an over an overview of what my bottlenecks would be during this project. Based on these insights, I made the decision to completely outsource the programming to an external party. This gave me the opportunity to be 100% focused on the game design aspect, from coming up with all the cards, their functionality and the balancing aspect, something which I had never done before.
